Flowers of the Holy Land. Jerusalem, F. F. Marroum, c. 1900. Oblong quarto, 33 x 24 cm, 25 folios, publisher’s binding in aubergine half-shagreen, covers fitted with a thick, bevelled olive wood plaque framed by a band of polychrome wood mosaic and featuring an engraved central cartouche; a Jerusalem cross engraved in the centre of the front cover and a central inscription in black stencilled ink, ‘Jerusalem’ in Hebrew and Gothic script in the centre of the second cover.
A rare herbarium of flowers and plants from the key sites of sacred history (Jerusalem, Mount Zion, Gethsemane, the Mount of Olives, the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings, the banks of the Kidron, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Mount Carmel, etc.), comprising 24 compositions, some featuring crosses.
Locally produced, likely intended for pilgrims.
