[BEYTHE (Istvan)]. *Stirpium nomenclator Pannonicus*. Antwerp, Christophe Plantin, 1584. 8 ff. (†8).
2 works in one in-8 volume, 11 x 17 cm, contemporary soft vellum binding with ivory flaps, traces of fastenings, handwritten title on the spine.
First edition, first printing, dedicated to Rudolf II, of the first herbarium of the Austro-Hungarian provinces, preceded by laudatory verses by Justus Lipsius and the German physicians Johann Posthius and Achille Cromerus.
Illustrated with 358 woodcuts of plants based on drawings by Pieter van der Borcht. Printer’s mark on the title page.
This first printing contains a four-leaf appendix (CC4), with a separate title page, illustrated with two woodcuts. Copies of the later second edition comprise 16 folios (CC–DD 8): a new appendix, errata and an index.
A fine copy. An old handwritten bookplate on the title page. Pale, old water-stain on a few folios.
Nissen BB II, 371.— Plesch, p. 302.— Voet 1007.
The second work is a Latin-Hungarian lexicon of Hungarian plants, compiled by a pastor from Güssing, where Charles de l’Écluse was staying. This is the second edition; the first was published the previous year in Güssing (the only known copy, held at the Franciscan monastery in Güssing, was lost during the Second World War). Printer’s mark on the title page.
Voet 1009. – Experts: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
