MARTYN (Thomas). *The English Entomologist, exhibiting all the coleopterous insects found in England*… London, Academy for Illustrating and Painting Natural History, 1792. Folio, 27.5 x 34 cm, 1 f., 34 pp., 2 ff., 2 + 42 pl., contemporary binding, signed H. Walther, in green long-grain morocco, with gilded spandrels and three gilded borders framing the covers, spine with raised bands decorated with motifs and gilt fillets, gilt fillet at the edges, inner frame in the same morocco with gilt piping.
A rare first edition of this remarkable work devoted to the beetles of England. Martyn describes over 500 species, the illustrations of which, according to the title, were published for the first time.
Illustrated with 535 figures on 42 plates, finely engraved and coloured, and 2 plates of medallions.
A fine morocco-bound copy, superbly bound by the London bookbinder Henry Walther (c. 1745–1835), formerly in the libraries of Robert Westley Hall-Dare (1789–1836) (engraved armorial bookplate), and subsequently from the natural history library of Gilbert Dufaux (dry-stamped seal on the title page and the second flyleaf). Spine sun-faded and covers slightly rubbed. – Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
