Description
VALMONT DE BOMARE (Jacques-Christophe). Universal Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Natural History… Lyon, Bruyset frères, 1791. 8 volumes in-4, 19 x 25.5 cm, XX + 786 pp., frontispiece & 2 ff., 888 pp. & 2 ff., 902 pp. & 2 ff., 896 pp. & 2 ff., 870 pp. & 2 ff., 796 pp. & 2 ff., 794 pp. & 2 ff., 564 + 216 pp., contemporary binding in marbled fawn sheepskin, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt motifs. Fourth edition. One of the most complete editions of this famous natural history dictionary. Illustrated with a lovely frontispiece engraved by Boily after a drawing by de Sève. ‘The first book in which the science of nature was truly made accessible to everyone’, according to Larousse; this famous natural history dictionary, published in 1764 and reprinted until 1800, served as a model for all works of its kind. A very fine copy, from the libraries of Perrault de Montrevost (heraldic ex-libris engraved with the Château de Montrevost in Cuisery, Saône-et-Loire), and subsequently to Gilbert Dufaux’s natural history library (dry-stamped seals on the title pages and p. 39). A few upper corners are slightly scuffed, with some scuffing to the covers. - Appraised by: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
