History of the adventurers who distinguished themselves in the Indies… Paris, Jacques Le Febvre, 1 June 1686. 2 volumes in-12, 9 x 15.5 cm, 15 leaves, 342 pages, 12 leaves, frontispiece, 3 plates and 2 folded maps & 3 leaves, 390 pp. (incorrectly numbered as 384), 12 ff., 1 folded plate and 1 map, contemporary binding in fawn sheepskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs.
First French edition of the most famous work on piracy in the West Indies in the 17th century, substantially expanded by Jean de Frontignières, who translated this text from the Spanish.
Illustrated with a fine frontispiece, 4 maps and 4 plates.
A fine copy. The frontispiece and plates in Volume I have very narrow margins. A few stains and foxing. The first five quires of Volume II are uniformly and slightly browned. A test page on pp. 99–100 of Volume II with a small loss of text in the marginal notes. Caps, corners and joints restored. Label from the Bardon bookshop in Madrid.
