Description
DIOSCORIDES. *De medicinali materie libri sex*… Frankfurt, Christian Egenolff, [1543]. In-4, 18.5 x 30 cm, 12 folios, 440 pages. (a-b6, A-Z6, Aa-Nn6, Oo4), modern binding in fawn calfskin, gilt edging on the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs. A fine humanist edition, the first published by Christian Egenolff (1502–1555) in Frankfurt, translated into Latin by Jean Ruel (1474–1537), annotated by Walther Hermann Ryff (c. 1500–1548) and annotated by Johann Lonitzer (1499–1569). This Greek treatise on medicinal substances is illustrated with nearly 600 woodcuts within the text, mainly of plants, but also of animals and minerals. From the natural history library of Gilbert Dufaux (dry-stamped on the title page and p. 39). A few old annotations in ink. Damage with a loss on the title page, roughly repaired; water stains; a burn hole in the upper margin of 17 leaves, without affecting the text. VD16 D2004. – Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
