First edition in Dutch, on heavy paper, based on the original German edition of 1746–1761. ‘One of the most beautiful German works on insects of the period.’ (Landwehr). Illustrated with a portrait of the author engraved in 1782 by C. Brouwer after Van der Sinissen, 3 frontispieces and 382 plates drawn and engraved by the author on 315 folded leaves. With the exception of the portrait, which is specific to this Dutch edition, all the illustrations are taken from the German edition and were watercoloured and gummed at the time. The first frontispiece (Volume I) was engraved by Martin Tyroff after Johann Justin Preissler; the second (Volume III) was drawn and engraved by the author; and the last (Volume V) was engraved by Michael Rössler after Nicolas Gabler. Pages slightly dusty. A small loss of paper at the margin of one plate, without affecting the engraving. Minor water stains and spots at the margins of some pages, without affecting the text or illustrations. Bindings rubbed, headbands worn, one spine repaired, a tear in a few clamps. Landwehr.
