Description
TABERNÆMONTANUS (Jacobus Theodorus, known as)]. Eicones plantarum, seu stirpium, arborum nempe, fructicum, herbarum, fructuum, lignorum, radicum, omnis generis; tam inquilinorum, quàm exoticorum. Frankfurt am Main, Nikolaus Basse, 1590. Oblong 8vo, 23 x 17.5 cm, 4 folios, 1128 pages, 8 folios, modern binding in imitation brown calfskin, plain ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs. A rare first edition. The 2,255 woodcuts of plants are those from the *Neuw Kreuterbuch*, by the same author, published two years earlier by the same publisher. A very fine copy. Handwritten annotations in ink, in several hands, from the 18th and 19th centuries, in the margins of each woodcut. A marginal loss on the last leaf affecting the text, skilfully restored, with the text deftly filled in with ink. Original endpapers. A few foxing spots; a stain on pp. 857–858. – Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
