KIRBY (William) & William SPENCE. An Introduction to Entomology, or Elements of the Natural History of Insects. London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1818–1826. 4 volumes in-8, 13 × 20.5 cm, XXIV + 520 pp., portrait frontispiece and 3 plates & 2 folios, 530 pp., portrait frontispiece and 2 plates (numbered IV & V) & VI pp., 1 f., 732 pp., 15 plates (numbered VI–XX) & IV + 634 pp., 1 f., 10 plates (numbered XXI–XXX), English binding from the second half of the 19th century in olive half-calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt and embossed motifs. The set comprises the third edition of Volume I and the second edition of Volume II, both dated 1818, and the first editions of Volumes III and IV, published in 1826, of this seminal work of modern English entomology. Illustrated with 2 engraved portraits of the authors and 30 engraved plates, the first 5 of which are finely coloured and the tenth enhanced with colour. A fine copy, from the library of Fred Rhodes, a naturalist and entomologist from Bradford in Great Britain, a member of the Bradford Naturalists’ Society and the Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union, whose extensive entomological collection is now held at the Cartwright Hall Museum in Bradford (bookplate).
