Baillière, 1829–1844. 3 volumes in-8, 15 x 23 cm, 2 folios, frontispiece portrait and 2 + 50 (numbered 48) + 70 (numbered 67) + 30 + 70 plates & 2 folios, frontispiece portrait and 38 + 11 (numbered 10) + 36 (numbered 35) + 6 + 110 (numbered 104) + 25 plates & 2 folios, XVI + 36 + 40 + 24 + 44 + 64 + 14 + 48 + 20 + 576 + 30 pp., a binding from the second half of the 19th century in fawn half-calf, spine decorated with gilt and blind-stamped faux ribs, untrimmed. First edition and first printing of this important atlas, published in instalments from 1829 to 1844 and conceived as an illustrated supplement to Cuvier’s *Règne animal*. The work comprises two volumes of plates depicting nearly 6,200 animals, devoted respectively to vertebrates and invertebrates, accompanied by a volume of explanatory text. Illustrated with 448 engraved plates, mainly based on drawings by the author and Édouard Traviés, and finely watercoloured. A very fine copy. Waterstains.
