First edition. First print run of this major illustrated work (132 plates and nearly 600 sketches in the text) based on works by Gavarni, Harvey, Jacque, Daumier, Delacroix, Grandville and Daubigny: 12 engraved plates of flowers and birds, coloured and gummed; 105 wood-engraved plates of animals and human figures; 10 views of the garden; 3 portraits; an allegorical frontispiece; and a map. A very fine copy, from the natural history library of Gilbert Dufaux (dry-stamped on the cover, the title page and one plate). A few foxing spots in the text volume.
