Description
BULLIARD (Pierre). Herbarium of France. Paris, 1784–1812. 7 folio volumes, 33.5 x 21.5 cm, contemporary binding in fawn-coloured, grain-textured sheepskin, spine entirely decorated with faux raised bands and gilt motifs. A rare and remarkable series, published in instalments from 1780 to 1793, constituting one of the major works of botany of the late 18th century. Illustrated with 618 fine plates engraved by the author, almost all in colour, inked with a stencil ‘in imitation of the brush’, some of which appear to have been retouched by hand. The set is complete with the last two plates (601 & 602) from the *History of Fungi*… which are often missing (slightly shorter). Missing from the *History of Poisonous Plants…* are the four plates of agarics, which were often set aside to be included with the *History of Fungi…* (Nissen, however, lists only 81 plates). Binding titles dated 1809 for the first volume of the *Histoire des champignons*… Third edition of the *Dictionnaire*… published in 1783, which served as a prospectus for the *Herbier de la France*. A very fine, highly decorative copy, partly printed on bluish paper, from the library of Jules de Vaucelle (heraldic bookplate). A few foxing spots and some browned pages. A few slightly worn corners. Small wormholes weakening the lower edges of a few pages. Nissen 296. Details: • BULLIARD. Dictionnaire élémentaire de botanique, ou Exposition par ordre alphabétique des préceptes de la botanique… Leblanc, 1812. XII + 212 pp., 19 ff., 1 blank folio, 10 plates. • BULLIARD. History of Poisonous and Suspect Plants of France. The author, Didot the Younger, Barrois the Younger, Belin, 1784. 2 ff., X + 178 pp., 81 plates (out of 85?). • BULLIARD & Étienne-Pierre VENTENAT. History of the Fungi of France… Leblanc, [1791] 1809–1812. 1 folio, XVI + 66 pp., 1 folio, 67–232 pp., 77 plates & 2 folios, 233–368 + 10 pp., 100 plates & 2 folios, 369–540 pp., 108 plates & 2 folios, 541–700 pp., 112 plates • [BULLIARD. History of Medicinal Plants. 1809]. Atlas of 130 separate plates (Nissen cites 128 plates). – Appraisers: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
