Description
GEOFFROY (Étienne-Louis). A Brief History of Insects… Paris, Calixte Volland, Rémont, 1799. 2 volumes in-4, 2 folios, XXVIII + 336 pp., 2 folios, 337–556 pp., 10 folded plates, 1 folded table & 2 folios, 448 pp., 2 folios, 449–744 pp., 11–22 plates, contemporary binding in fawn half-basane, spine decorated with faux raised bands and gilt fleurons. Second, expanded edition of this work first published in 1762. Illustrated with 22 beautiful engraved and finely coloured plates. An exceptional copy, one of the rare reprints in quarto format and printed on heavy paper. The specific title pages and half-titles of this edition have been bound in their correct places. Presumably from the library of the great naturalist Jacques François de Borda d’Oro (1718–1804), who had amassed a significant collection of mineralogy (small wet stamp ‘Borda’ on the title pages and a typographic label from the Gosse bookshop in Bayonne pasted to the reverse of the first title leaf), and subsequently from the library of the Lazarist house in Aix-en-Provence (wet stamp on the title pages) and from Gilbert Dufaux’s natural history library (dry stamp on the first title page and p. 39 of the first volume). Stains on a few leaves, notably pp. 248–249, 336, 512–513 and 553–556 of the first volume. A few foxing spots. Spines and caps superficially restored. - Appraiser: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
