Description
CANDOLLE (Augustin-Pyramus de). *Plantarum historia succulentarum*. History of Succulent Plants… Paris, A. J. Dugour and Durand, [1799]–1805. 2 volumes and one folio volume, 25.5 x 33 cm, 3 + 178 ff. (numbered 159, including ff. 27*, 27**, 71*, 77*, [85*], 92*, [111*], 117*, 123*, 125*, 126*, 128*, [137*, 137**], 138*, [138**], 140*, 143* & 148*), 169 plates, late 19th-century German-style binding in aubergine half-shagreen with corners, spine decorated with gilt and blind-stamped faux raised bands. ‘From the point of view of colour printing, Redouté’s masterpiece’ (Dunthorne. Flower & fruit prints of the 18th and early 19th centuries). First edition, published in 28 instalments between 1799 and 1805. Remarkably illustrated with 169 dot-engraved plates printed in colour after Pierre-Joseph Redouté, who uses his colour printing process here for the first time. Three additional instalments (plates 160 to 185) were published in 1828–1832 with texts by Guillemin. A very fine copy. The title page of the second volume was not retained by the bookbinder. With a few text leaves reversed (ff. 65–66, 139–142). A few rare text leaves uniformly browned. Spines and corners slightly rubbed; cloth on the covers coming away at the edges. Nissen 321.— Stafleu 983 (“There are hardly any identical copies. Very often plates are missing, but the variety of indexes, title-pages and wrappers is such that a huge number of ‘variants’ exist”).- Hunt, p. 42 (“This work is significant as the first to be wholly illustrated by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, and the only one for which he himself made all of the engravings”). - Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
