Description
GRIENDEL (Johann Franz). Micrographia nova: or A description of new and curious varieties of various minute bodies, singularly augmented and represented in marvellous magnification by means of a microscope recently invented by the author… Nuremberg, Johann Zieger, 1687. In-4, 16.5 x 21 cm, 4 folios, 64 pp., 33 plates, including 25 folded plates, contemporary brown calfskin binding, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs. A rare first edition of one of the earliest German works on microscopy, presenting over fifty observations by the Capuchin friar Griendel, a mathematician, optician and engineer, who had designed his own microscope. The work was criticised by Van Leeuwenhoek, who nevertheless reproduced two of Griendel’s figures in his letters to the Royal Society. Illustrated with 33 engraved plates, depicting animals and objects under high magnification. Pinholes, frayed pages. Spine re-glued, corners restored. – Appraised by: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
