Description
REGNAULT (Nicolas-François & Geneviève). Botany Made Accessible to All, or A Collection of Plants Used in Medicine, Food and the Arts… Paris, published by the author, 1774. 5 tomes and 4 volumes in large folio, 32 x 47.5 cm, 3 ff., 80 ff., 1 f., 3 + 1 + 80 pl. & 1 f., 3 blank ff., 105 ff., 105 plates & 1 folio, 3 blank folios, 110 folios, 110 plates & 1 folio, 84 folios, 84 plates & 1 folio, 90 ff., 90 pl., 12 + 4 pp., 2 ff., contemporary binding in marbled fawn calfskin, spine with raised bands decorated with gilt motifs, gilt edge-rounding. First edition, published between 1770 and 1780, with the titles engraved with the date 1774, of one of the finest French works of illustrated botany from the 18th century. Illustrated with 472 coloured plates, mainly drawn and engraved by Geneviève de Nangis, the wife of N.-Fr. Regnault (except for the opening plate ‘Plante curieuse. The Peruvian lily…’, drawn and engraved by Regnault himself), some of which were partially printed in colour and then finished by hand. Beautiful engraved and coloured title pages. A ‘Table of Plants’ leaf, printed on bluish paper, bound at the end of each volume (a third loose copy, slightly frayed, is enclosed). A fine copy, from the libraries of Louis Joseph Arlault d’Affonville (born 1740), an artillery officer (ex-libris), then from Mme Bernard de la Barre de Nanteuil, née Renée Savary de Beauregard (1886–1962), and from the natural history collection of Gilbert Dufaux (dry-stamped seals on the title pages). Title page of Volume I, an engraved leaflet entitled ‘Introduction to Botany’, and the first three plates of Volume I printed on bluish paper and mounted on tabs in a rough, old-fashioned manner. The explanatory leaflet for the last plate of Volume I is torn but complete, and was roughly lined in the past. Water stains on the first two plates of Volume III and a corner stain on Volume IV. Numerous plates printed on slightly bluish paper in Volume IV. A small stain along the edge of the front cover of Volume III. - Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
