LA CHAUSSE (Michel Ange de). The Great Roman Cabinet, or Collection of Roman Antiquities comprising bas-reliefs, statues of gods and men, priestly instruments, lamps, urns, buckets, bracelets, keys, rings and tear bottles, found in Rome… Amsterdam, François L’Honoré and Zacharie Chastelain the Younger, 1706. Folio, 24 x 37 cm, 7 folios, 126 pp., 2 ff., frontispiece and 43 plates, early 19th-century binding in fawn-coloured grained calfskin, gilt roulette framing the covers, spine decorated with faux raised bands and gilt motifs, title label.
First French edition (based on the original Latin edition of 1690), second printing, with the leaflet ‘Notice to the Reader’ replacing the leaflet ‘To the Reader’.
Illustrated with a frontispiece drawn and engraved by Caspar Luyken, and 43 unsigned plates engraved by Santi Bartoli, depicting 160 ancient objects (engraved stones, vases, phallic objects, sculptures, etc.) from the collection of the author, a banker and consul based in Rome, numismatist and art collector. Title vignette drawn and engraved by Jan Goeree and an engraved coat-of-arms banner.
From the library of Gilbert Dufaux (dry-stamped on the title page and p. 39). Plates uniformly yellowed. Old water stains and violet ink stains on several leaves.
