Description
SWAMMERDAM (Jan). *Biblia naturae, sive Historia insectorum… Bybel der natuure… or Historie der insecten…* Leiden, Isaac Severinus, Boudewyn van der Aa, Pieter van der Aa, 1737–1738. 2 folio volumes, 23 x 36.5 cm, 25 folios, 362 pages, 16 blank folios, 16 plates & 26 folios, 367–910 + 124 pp., 37 blank folios, 37 plates (numbered XVII–LIII), contemporary binding in marbled fawn calfskin, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt motifs. First edition, published by Herman Boerhaave, fifty-seven years after Swammerdam’s death. Using a microscope and extremely precise dissections, the author reveals the anatomy, development and metamorphosis of insects in particular. Dutch and Latin text, side by side. Illustrated with 53 fine engraved plates. A very fine copy, on heavy paper, from Gilbert Dufaux’s natural history library (dry stamps on the title pages). Bindings, slightly dissimilar, restored; spines re-glued with minor losses. – Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
