The Dictionary of the Arts and Sciences… Paris, the widow of Jean-Baptiste Coignard & Jean-Baptiste Coignard, 21 August & 11 September 1694. 2 + 2 folio volumes, 25.5 x 35 cm, 10 folios, 672 pages, 33 folios, frontispiece & 1 folio, 672 pp., 23 ff. & 3 ff., 648 pp. & 1 f., 620 pp., contemporary binding in brown calfskin, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt motifs. First edition, now rare, of the famous Dictionnaire de l’Académie française, accompanied by its supplement, the Dictionnaire des arts et des sciences by Thomas Corneille (1625–1709), a member of the Académie française and brother of the great Corneille. Very complete, with the fine frontispiece engraved by Mariette and Gérard Edelinck after a design by Jean-Baptiste Corneille. A very fine copy in a uniform contemporary binding, skilfully restored, from the library of Henry-Philippe Maloteau de Millevoye (1653–1737), lawyer and royal adviser to the bailiwick of Tournai (typographical labels).
