A Brief History of the Insects Found in the Vicinity of Paris… Paris, Durand, 1762. 2 vols. in-4, 18.5 x 25 cm, [4] ff., XXVIII, 524 pp., 10 folded plates and 1 folded table & 2 ff., 690 pp., 1 blank folio, 12 folded plates (numbered XI–XXII), contemporary binding in marbled fawn calfskin, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt motifs.
First edition. In it, Geoffroy proposes an original classification of insects into six orders: Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Tetraptera with powdery wings, Tetraptera with naked wings, Diptera and Aptera.
Illustrated with 22 engraved plates and a large systematic table.
A very fine copy, from the libraries of Pierre Hecquet d’Orval (1743–1827), a manufacturer in Abbeville and a lover of science (engraved heraldic bookplate), and subsequently from the natural history collection of Gilbert Dufaux (bookplate and drystamped marks on the title pages and p. 39). – Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
