Description
MOFFET (Thomas). *Insectorum sive minimorum animalium theatrum*… London, printed by Thomas Cotes, 1634. Folio, 19.5 x 30.5 cm, 10 folios, 316 pp. (numbered 326), 2 ff., contemporary binding in brown calfskin, with triple blind-stamped fillet framing the covers, modern spine with imitation blind-stamping. Posthumous first edition of one of the earliest works entirely devoted to entomology published in England. Third state (without the publisher’s name and with the pagination error on p. 48), which appears to be the rarest. Illustrated with over 500 woodcuts on the title page, within the text and on the four final plates. A fine copy, from the natural history library of Gilbert Dufaux (embossed stamp on the title page and p. 39). A few leaves uniformly browned at the margins or slightly frayed. Modern spine, restored corners, replaced endpapers. - Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
