In-4, 21.5 x 26.5 cm, VIII pp. + 2 pp. (numbered [III]–IV) + 160 pp. (numbered [5]–164), 2 ff., 16 pp., 10 pl., modern binding in burgundy half-shagreen with corners, ribbed spine. First edition of the first true monograph on hyacinths. This copy, missing the title page and the 2 ff. of the table of contents, includes the ‘Address to the Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin’ (8 pp.), the main text, the table of contents and the “Catalogue of Hyacinths Known in 1767” (15 pp.) The Marquis de Saint-Simon had collected more than two thousand varieties of hyacinths in his garden near Utrecht. Illustrated with 10 copperplate engravings by Jacob van der Schley. A fine copy, from the natural history library of Gilbert Dufaux (dry stamp on the title page and p. 39). Title page uniformly browned and soiled; slight marginal water-stain on the first four quires; the last plate and pp. VII–VIII uniformly browned; tears without loss on pp. VII–VIII. – Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
