Quarto, 17 x 25.5 cm, 2 folios, 388 pages, 1 folio, frontispiece, contemporary binding by Marius Michel, in blue morocco, floral decoration in a mosaic of grey and black morocco on the covers, ribbed spine, inner border of blue morocco with gilded floral decoration and a mosaic of grey morocco, double border of gilded fillets, grey tabis endpapers, gilt edges, covers preserved, slipcase. Edition, printed in a run of 500 copies, illustrated with a portrait of the author engraved as a frontispiece by Burney and 10 chapter heads etched after F. Flameng and O. Cortazzo. A very fine copy, one of the first 150 (no. 54) printed on large vellum paper, including a pre-letter sequence. Mosaic binding by Marius Michel. From the library of Henri Hartmann (ex-libris).
