HEDWIG (Jean). *Theoria generationis et fructificationis platarum cryptogamicarum linnaei*… Leipzig, Breitkopf-Haertel, 1798. 2 volumes in-4, 22.5 x 27.5 cm, XII + 268 pp. & frontispiece, 1 + 42 plates, contemporary half-ivory vellum binding, untrimmed. One of Hedwig’s major works, first published in St Petersburg in 1784, on the generation of fungi, mosses and marchantiophytes. The atlas includes a portrait of the author, a technical plate and 42 beautiful plates engraved from the author’s drawings and delicately watercoloured.
