Description
JONSTON (Jan). Historiae naturalis… Amsterdam, Jean-Jacques Schipper, 1657. 6 parts in one folio volume, 23 x 37.5 cm, 6 pp., 1 f., 164 pp., 80 plates & 6 ff., 168 pp. (numbered 160), 62 plates & 6 pp., 1 folio, 160 pp., 47 plates, including one folded, & 58 pp., 1 folio, 20 plates & 4 folios, 148 pp., 28 plates & 1 folio, 38 pp. (numbered [28]), contemporary binding in fawn calfskin, Du Seuil-style blind-stamped borders on the covers, ribbed spine decorated with blind-stamped fillets.
Second edition, published in Amsterdam in 1657, following the first edition published in Frankfurt between 1650 and 1653, of this comprehensive illustrated synthesis of the zoological knowledge of the time: *Historiæ naturalis de quadrupedibus libri…*; Historiæ naturalis de avibus libri VI…
Illustrated with 4 frontispiece titles and 249 engraved plates: 80 for quadrupeds, 62 for birds, 47 for fish and cetaceans, 20 for marine animals and shellfish, 28 for insects and 12 for snakes and dragons. The frontispieces and plates have been re-engraved and are reversed compared with those in the original edition.
A very fine copy, from the natural history library of Gilbert Dufaux (dry-stamped on the title page and on p. 39 of the first part). The first frontispiece is soiled and very slightly shorter. The binding has been extensively restored, with new endpapers. - Appraised by: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
