Description
CHAUDOIR (Maximilien de). Memoirs on the Carabidae… Moscow, Imperial Society of Naturalists of Moscow, 1842–1846 & Kiev, I. Wallner’s Printing Works, 1847. In-8, 14 x 21 cm, 1 folio, 48 + 122 + 68 + 34 + 14 pp., 1 folio, contemporary French binding in red half-shagreen, ribbed spine decorated with blind-stamped lines and gilt motifs.
First edition, rare, of this collection of four offprints published in the Bulletin of the Imperial Society of Naturalists of Moscow between 1842 and 1846, brought together under a single title and supplemented at the end with the author’s Observations, printed in 1847 in Kiev.
The volume comprises: New genera of the family Carabidae (continued); New Carabidae…; Three papers on the family Carabidae… and A note on the group of Stomidae and a description of a new genus within the Somoplatidae.
These texts constitute fundamental contributions to the systematics of the Carabidae and precede the important *Memoir on the family Carabidae*, published by Baron de Chaudoir (1816–1881) between 1848 and 1857.
A fine copy of this work, printed in a small run, from the library of the American entomologist James Thomson (1828–1897), who was based in France and was a leading specialist in beetles (featuring an engraved heraldic bookplate). A handwritten table in ink and red and black pencil on the reverse of the title page. Foxing and browned pages. – Appraised by: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
