Description
LATREILLE (Pierre-André) & Auguste DEJEAN. Natural History and Iconography of the Coleoptera of Europe… First [–third] instalment. Paris, Crevot, 1822–[1824]. In-8, 13 x 21 cm, 2 ff., 198 pp., 15 pl., contemporary red half-paper binding, spine decorated with gilt faux-ribbing.
First edition. A rare collection of the three instalments—the only ones ever published—of this work on the systematics and iconography of beetles, the result of a collaboration between Latreille, a naturalist and entomologist, and General Dejean, one of the great insect collectors of his time.
Illustrated with 15 engraved and finely coloured plates.
An autograph letter (1½ pages on a double-leaf sheet forming an envelope), signed by Count Dejean, dated 20 January 1836, addressed to Jean-Victor Audouin, Professor of Entomology at the Natural History Museum, is bound at the front. In it, Dejean proposes an exchange of specimens and mentions the publication of a catalogue of his collection.
A remarkable copy, in perfect condition, from the library of Dr L.-J. Fournier (ex-libris) and the collector and amateur entomologist Roland Darge (1904–1980) (wet stamp on the back cover). - Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
