In-8, 12.5 x 19.5 cm, 3 ff., 426 pp., frontispiece, contemporary binding in green half-basane, spine decorated with gilt faux-ribbing. First edition of this medical treatise on the menopause and its physiological consequences. The term ‘menopause’ was, in fact, coined and used for the first time by Dr de Gardanne (1789–1827) in the second edition of the work (1821). In this first edition, he uses the term “ménespausie”. Illustrated with a beautiful allegorical frontispiece engraved with a burin by Marie-François Dien (1787–1865), winner of the Prix de Rome in 1809, and reproduced in etching by Louis Marie Normand (1789–1874) after the painter and draughtsman Louis Lafitte (1770–1828), winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1791.
