Description
REDI (Francesco). Experimenta circa generationem insectorum… Amsterdam, André Frisius, 1671. Small in-12, 7.5 x 13.5 cm, 5 ff., 3 + 7 ff., title-frontispiece and 10 folded plates + 28 plates, contemporary flap binding in ivory vellum, plain spine.
A rare first Latin edition of one of the seminal texts of experimental biology, constituting one of the earliest refutations of the theory of spontaneous generation.
Illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, dated 1670, two sketches in the text (one of which is full-page), 10 folded plates and 38 plates at the end, each containing one or two figures of insects, all engraved on copper. Complete with the errata sheet.
A fine copy, from the natural history library of Gilbert Dufaux (ex-libris). A handwritten note on the front of the first flyleaf and a few old annotations on the plates at the end, in French, in brown ink. The plate on p. 225 has been repaired in the past and is complete. - Appraisers: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
