Description
RESTE (Bernard de). History of the fishing, discoveries and settlements of the Dutch in the North Seas… Paris, Stoupe’s Press for the widow Nyon, [1791]–1800–1801. 3 volumes in-8, 12 x 20 cm, 2 ff., IV + XXXVI + 432 pp., folded frontispiece and 13 folded plates & 2 ff., 464 pp., folded frontispiece and 5 plates & 2 ff., 378 pp., 8 plates, contemporary binding in marbled fawn sheepskin, with gilt lace framing the covers, spine decorated with faux raised bands and gilt motifs, title and volume number labels. First complete edition of this important work on the history of whaling, the natural history of cetaceans and seal hunting, translated by Bernard de Reste at the government’s request. The first volume alone was printed in 1791 (reprinted here with an interim title and the addition of two explanatory leaves) when the author was imprisoned by order of the Revolutionary Tribunal. It was not until 1798 that he was able to complete his translation. However, the bookseller Nyon died of an illness and the complete work, published by his widow, did not appear until 1800–1801. The text is adapted from the treatise by Cornelis G. Zorgdrager, published in Amsterdam in 1720. Reste added a bibliographical essay on the subject and clarifications on the natural history of Iceland, Lapland and Greenland. Illustrated with 6 maps and 22 plates, engraved by the geographer and mapmaker Charles Picquet (1771–1827). Good condition. Spines slightly rubbed, corners worn. - Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
