Folio, 24 x 38 cm, 4 folios, XXIV + 1296 pages, 22 folios, contemporary brown calfskin binding, modern ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets, title label. First edition of this herbal, illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts of plants from Europe as well as the New World, such as tobacco and the tomato, featuring the first known record of cultivation in America, on plantations visited by the author in Virginia and South Carolina, on the banks of the Wadmalaw River. Illustrated with a beautiful frontispiece title plate engraved by Michael van der Gucht after E. Knight. Several yellowed quires with foxing.
