SERRES (Olivier de). *The Theatre of Agriculture and Farm Management*… in which is set out everything that is required and necessary to properly establish, manage, enrich and beautify a country home… Paris, Mme Huzard, 1804–1805. 2 volumes in-4, 21 x 26.5 cm, CXCII + 672 pp., frontispiece and one plate & XLIV + 948 pp., frontispiece and 16 plates, 19th-century binding in bottle-green half-shagreen, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, gilt end-pieces. A very fine edition of the seminal work on rural economics in France, supplemented with notes by Chaptal, Parmentier, Huzard, Candolle, etc., a lengthy eulogy of the author by N. François de Neufchâteau, and a Historical Essay on the State of Agriculture in Europe in the Sixteenth Century by Abbé Grégoire. Illustrated with 2 engraved frontispieces, including a portrait of the author, and 17 engraved plates (layout plans for flowerbeds) reproducing the figures from the first edition of 1600, as well as engraved headbands. A fine copy from the libraries of Adolphe Toulouse, Dr Felix Durosier and Gilbert Dufaux, bearing their bookplates. A small tear, with no loss of material, in the margin of folio G2 of Volume I, without affecting the text.
