APOLLONIUS OF RHODES. The Expedition of the Argonauts, or The Conquest of the Golden Fleece. A poem in four cantos. Translated from the Greek into French for the first time… Paris, Moutardier, Deroy & Conflans-Charenton, printed by J. C. Laveaux, 1796–1797. In-8, 12 x 19.5 cm, 54 (incorrectly numbered as 56) + 400 pp., contemporary binding in fawn calfskin, spine decorated with faux raised bands and gilt motifs, title label, gilt roulette on the edges. First edition of the first French translation, produced by the orientalist Jean Jacques Antoine Caussin de Perceval (1759–1835), professor at the Collège de France. A fine copy, beautifully bound and with generous margins. The first quire comprises just 7 leaves, in keeping with the digitised copies (Gallica, New York Public Library).
