First edition published in French in Stockholm. ‘This work, one of the finest we have on this branch of natural history, is highly sought-after and difficult to find. The first volume in particular is extremely rare, because the author, dissatisfied with its lack of success, destroyed part of the print run.’ (Brunet).
Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author, engraved by Jacob Gillberg after G. Lundberg, and 238 plates engraved by Carl Bergqvist. With a folded plate.
Good condition. From the extensive natural history library of the veterinary surgeon Jean-Baptiste Huzard (1755–1838), of the Academy of Sciences, bearing his wet seal (cat. 1842, I, no. 3502), and subsequently from the natural history library of Gilbert Dufaux (dry stamp on the title page and p. 39). Pages yellowed. Head, corners and spine restored.
