A New Commentary on the Naval Ordinance of August 1681… La Rochelle, Jérôme Legier & Pierre Mesnier, 1760. 2 volumes in-8, 19 x 24.5 cm, 4 ff., XLII pp., 1 f., 766 pp. & 2 ff., XII + 796 pp., contemporary binding in marbled fawn sheepskin, gilt coat of arms in the centre of the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs. A rare first edition of this important commentary, providing an overview of maritime customs in the mid-18th century, with particular reference to La Rochelle. A fine print from La Rochelle. A very fine copy. Signed by Aimé de la Fontenelle de Vaudoré (1748–1795) on the title pages. Coat of arms of the de La Fontenelle family, no doubt affixed by Armand Désiré de La Fontenelle de Vaudoré (1784–1847), historian of the Vendée and founding member of the Société des antiquaires de l’Ouest. A contemporary label from the bookseller Chaboceau of La Rochelle glued to the half-title page of the first volume. A few pinholes and rare ink stains.
