Description
MORANDI (Giovanni Battista). *Historia botanica practica, seu plantarum, quae ad usum medicinae pertinent*… Milan, Joseph Galeatium, 1761. Folio, 24 x 40 cm, 5 folios, 32 + 162 pages, 1 folio, 68 plates, contemporary French binding in marbled fawn calfskin, with triple gilt fillet framing the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs.
Second edition of this important Italian medical herbarium.
Illustrated with 544 sketches on 68 plates drawn and engraved by the author, a Milanese botanist, physician and painter, to whom we also owe the beautiful frontispiece, the title vignette and the heraldic banner at the head of the dedication.
A fine copy, from the natural history libraries of the mathematician and naturalist Thomas de Lavernède (1766–1848), librarian to the city of Nîmes (signature on the reverse of the first flyleaf), and subsequently from Gilbert Dufaux (dry-stamped seal on the title page and p. 39). Title page and frontispiece slightly soiled. Faint marginal water-stain on the text leaves. Minor marginal pinholes on the plates, not serious. Marginal stain on plate XXXVIII. Small tear, with no loss of material, on plate XXXIX. – Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
