Description
VENTENAT (Etienne Pierre). A selection of plants, most of which are cultivated in Cels’s garden. Paris, Imprimerie de Crapelet, 1803[–1808]. Folio, 34 x 51 cm, 65 folios, 60 plates, late 19th-century binding in red half-shagreen, ribbed spine decorated with gilded motifs. First edition of the description of the exotic plants in the garden of the botanist and horticulturist Jacques Philippe Martin Cels (1740–1806), situated alongside the Chaussée du Maine in Paris (now Rue Cels). Illustrated with 60 engraved plates. The 30 plates in the first series are engraved from drawings by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (16 plates) or by Pancrace Bessa, his pupil (14 plates). The 30 plates in the second series were engraved after drawings by Pierre-Antoine Poiteau or Pierre Jean François Turpin. Very good condition.
