Description
[BARNAUD (Nicolas)]. *The Morning Wake-up Call of the French and their Neighbours*. Composed by Eusèbe Philadelphe Cosmopolite, in the form of Dialogues [Followed by:] Second Dialogue of *The Morning Wake-up Call of the French and their Neighbours*. Edinburgh [Geneva or Strasbourg], Jacques James, 1574. 2 parts in one in-12 volume, half-shagreen with corners from the second half of the 19th century. (19) ff., (1) blank folio, 159 pp.; 192 pp. Title page reattached and stained, slight soiling, final page stained. A rare first joint edition of the two dialogues, published under the pseudonym Eusèbe Philadelphe Cosmopolite and with a false Edinburgh address. The second part appears here for the first time, whilst the first dialogue had been first published in Latin in 1573. Long attributed to Théodore de Bèze or François Hotman, this famous Protestant pamphlet is now mainly associated with Nicolas Barnaud, although its composition appears to be the result of collaboration between several Huguenot authors gathered around Th. de Bèze (The BnF specifically mentions Nicolas Barnaud and Hugues Doneau).
