Description
[BEREY (Claude-Auguste)] [BONNART (Nicolas)]. *The History of the French Monarchy, containing portraits of all its kings, from Pharamond to Louis XIV, the present reigning monarch* (...). Paris, Bonnart, undated (c. 1720/30). One folio volume, in period marbled paper. Wear and minor losses to the cover, soiling, and traces of damp at the margin of plate VII.
A rare series entirely engraved on copper, attributed to the engraver and print dealer Claude-Auguste Berey (c. 1651–1732). It comprises 13 plates depicting French monarchs in medallions, accompanied by brief notes recounting the main events of their lives and reigns. The richly ornamented compositions combine historical scenes, allegorical figures and numerous emblematic motifs.
This copy is enhanced by an additional plate depicting Louis XV’s First Lit de Justice.
