Description
EMILI (Paolo). *De rebus gestis Francorum* in 10 books by Paulus Aemilius of Verona, the most illustrious historian; *De rebus gestis Gallorum* in 9 books by Arnoldus Ferronis of Bordeaux, Royal Councillor, added to the history of Paulus Aemilius. Chronicon by J. Tilius on the kings of the Franks, from Pharamund to Henry II. Paris, Michel de Vascosan, 1555. One volume in 8vo, contemporary brown calfskin, ribbed spine, covers decorated with a blind-stamped fillet border, a gilt fleur-de-lis in the centre and gilt fleur-de-lis motifs at the corners. Restoration to the spine and title page, a tear at the top of the spine. 448 pp. A Parisian edition, printed in italic type, of this important History of France by the Veronese humanist Paolo Emilio (c. 1460–1529), a historiographer summoned to France under Charles VIII. His work constitutes one of the first major humanist histories of the French monarchy, covering the period from its origins to the reign of Charles VIII. The title page also announces the sequels by Arnoul Le Ferron and Jean Du Tillet, published separately by Vascosan and likely to have been attached to this volume. In line with the copy held by the BnF, our volume contains only the ten books by Paolo Emilio.
