Description
[French Revolution] [FREY (Lucius Junius)] The Political Adventures of Father Nicaise, or The Anti-Federalist. Paris: published by the Marchands de Nouveautés, 1793. A small 16mo pamphlet, in 19th-century half-basane, with a plain, decorated spine. 72 pp. Paper soiled.
First edition of this rare revolutionary pamphlet in which the author defends the unity and indivisibility of the Republic and opposes ‘federalism’, an accusation then levelled against the Girondins and their supporters in the departments.
Lucius Junius Frey, born Moses Dobruška, a singular figure of Moravian origin who had converted to revolutionary ideas, was close to François Chabot. Implicated in the Compagnie des Indes affair and associated with the ‘foreigners’ persecuted alongside the Dantonists, he was guillotined in Paris in April 1794.
Includes:
The Whims of an Aristocrat, a new almanac for the year 1792. With a booklet detailing the exact locations of post stations and the distances for the journey to and from Paris by post coach, to the border towns, as well as the other principal towns of the Kingdom. Paris, Francion, n.d. [1792]. One volume, 16mo, 19th-century brown half-calf, plain spine with decoration. XXXVI, 108 pp. Stains, creases.
A satirical and counter-revolutionary almanac containing a frontispiece depicting figures busy removing the coats of arms and emblems of the Ancien Régime from a façade. The work concludes with a parody of an approval granted ‘in the third year of the Era of Liberty’, signed ‘Cochon and Associates, rag-pickers of the Propaganda’.
