Description
[Coptic manuscript – Egypt]. Coptic-Arabic liturgical manuscript. Egypt, probably 17th–18th century. One volume, approx. 16.5 x 26 cm, in period full leather binding, the covers decorated with embossed interlacing patterns and a central medallion stamped with an interlaced design. This manuscript shows signs of repeated use: the binding is worn, the internal hinges are split, the stitches have come undone, there are numerous restorations to the leaves, as well as missing sections and soiling. 219 handwritten folios. An important liturgical manuscript of the Coptic Church of Egypt (Psalter?), on paper, written in black and red ink, mainly in Bohairic Coptic, with some passages rubricated in Arabic. Numerous rubricated initials, some of which are large and richly calligraphed, extending into the margins with ornamentation in black and red ink. Several decorative geometric and cruciform compositions. A few folios, in a different hand (with Arabic rubrics in red) and on a different type of paper, appear to have been added to the volume at an earlier date.
