Description
[French Guiana] AYMÉ (Jean-Jacques). The Deportation and Shipwreck of J.J. Aymé, former legislator; followed by A Portrait of the Life and Death of the Deportees, on his departure from French Guiana, with some observations on this colony and on the Blacks. Paris, Maradan, n.d. [1800]. One in-8 volume, half-basane with corner pieces. 269 pp., (13) ff. of tables. Some scuffing to the covers; corner loss of paper on the half-title and title pages. First edition of this important account devoted to the political deportations to French Guiana following the coup d’état of 18 Fructidor Year V (4 September 1797). Jean-Jacques Aymé (1752–1818), former public prosecutor for the Drôme department and subsequently a deputy in the Council of Five Hundred, was arrested after 18 Fructidor and sentenced to deportation. Shipped off to French Guiana in 1798, he recounts here the story of his arrest, his imprisonment at the Temple, his transfer to Rochefort, the Atlantic crossing and the harsh living conditions of the deportees in French Guiana. He also recounts his escape in October 1799, his embarkation on an American ship and the subsequent shipwreck off the coast of Scotland, before his return to France in March 1800. The account is followed by lists of the political deportees sent to French Guiana, giving in particular their names, ages, occupations and circumstances at the time of Aymé’s departure. These lists cover the deportees who embarked on *La Vaillante*, *La Charente*, *La Décade* and *La Bayonnaise*.
