Description
LABORDE (Alexandre de). A Descriptive Itinerary of Spain, and a Basic Overview of the Various Branches of Administration and Industry in that Kingdom. Paris, H. Nicolle and Le Normant, 1809. 5 volumes and an atlas, in-8, in full contemporary sheepskin, smooth spine with decoration. Some skin wear, small wormholes. Second edition, accompanied by an atlas of 29 maps based on Lartigue’s work, some of which are folded or spread across two pages (maps of Catalonia, Valencia, Aragon, Andalusia, Extremadura, Murcia, Navarre, Biscay, Asturias, Galicia, León, the Two Castiles and the Balearic Islands…). The result of the travels undertaken by Alexandre de Laborde (1773–1842) in Spain in the early 19th century, the work constitutes one of the most comprehensive descriptions of the country published at that time. The first three volumes form the itinerary proper and describe, in turn, the various provinces, their towns, monuments and transport routes; the last two provide an overview of Spain in terms of administration, the economy, agriculture, industry, trade, the population, the arts and customs.
