Description
KUNISADA (Utagawa), known as TOYOKUNI III (1786–1865). Meigi sanju rokka-sen [A Selection of Thirty-Six Famous Courtesans]. Edo, Tsutaya Kichizō (Kōeidō), 1860–1861. One volume (approx. 25 x 35 cm), Japanese-style binding in green embossed paper, bearing a label on the front cover: F. Doriot Private Collection.
An album containing the first 30 prints in ōban format (out of 36), preceded by an introductory page featuring a portrait of Toyokuni III and facsimiles of calligraphic works.
A fine set with colours that have retained their freshness, dedicated to the famous courtesans of Edo, depicted in opulent interiors or against scenic backdrops, adorned in sumptuous kimonos. Each composition is accompanied by a calligraphic cartouche and bears the signature of Toyokuni III, the censorship seals and the publisher’s mark.
