Description
RÉAGE (Dominique Aury, pseudonym Pauline). *The Story of O*. Foreword by Jean Paulhan. Paris, Jean-Jacques Pauvert, 1954. A 12mo volume, bound in full later purple chagrin, with a smooth spine bearing the title in gold lettering and a phallic gold embossing, original covers preserved. Spine slightly faded, otherwise a fine copy. First edition, printed in a run of 600 copies not for general sale. One of the 480 copies printed on laid paper (no. 263). “It is well known what difficulties the judicial investigation into this work—deemed to be an offence against public decency—caused for the publisher and the author of the preface. The judge in charge of the investigation was only able to obtain the address or true identity of Mrs or Miss Pauline Réage from Paulhan, who had acted as an intermediary between the author and Mr Pauvert. In the end, there was no trial, but the case was not definitively closed until 1959” (Pia, 634–635).
