Description
BOILEAU (Nicolas). The Works of Nicolas Boileau Despréaux. With historical notes, provided by the author himself. A new edition, revised, corrected and expanded with various remarks [by Brossette]. Enriched with engravings by Bernard Picart the Roman. At La Aye, P. Gosse & J. Neaulme, 1729. 2 vols. folio; title page, [2] folios (title page, dedication to the Princess of Wales), XVIII pp., [2] folios (table of contents, privilege), 450 pp. + [4] folios (title page, table of contents, ‘To Mr Perrault’, 1 blank folio), VIII–370 pp., [10] folios (table of contents), plates, contemporary havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title and volume number labels in red morocco, triple blind-stamped border on the covers, gilded garland on the edges, red edges (defects including 2 uncovered caps, a split at the tail of a bit; tears without missing pages along the engravings in vol. 1 on the title page and p. 324, vol. 2 p. 263, very moderate scattered foxing, stains on the border of a plate from *Le Lutrin*, repairs in the margin on vol. & p. 153, one portrait missing).
One of the finest early editions of Boileau, illustrated by Bernard Picart (1673–1733). It was first published in 1718; this copy conforms to that edition save for a few minor ornamental details, and features a re-engraved frontispiece, according to Cohen (166), who mentions it in the Amsterdam entry.
The illustrations comprise an allegorical frontispiece, a large vignette repeated on the title pages, two headpieces and two initials, seven insert plates for *Le Lutrin* and 29 end-plate illustrations, some of which are repeated. A copy lacking the portrait of the Princess of Wales, but enriched at the beginning of volume 2 with a portrait of Boileau engraved by F. Chereau after H. Rigaud (with narrow margins and crease marks).
