Description
DELACROIX. GOETHE (Johann Wolfgang von). *Faust*, a tragedy by Mr de Goethe, translated into French by Mr Albert Stapfer. Illustrated with a portrait of the author and 17 drawings based on the principal scenes of the work and executed on stone by Mr Eugène Delacroix. Paris: C. Motte and Sautelet, 1828. Large folio, [2] leaves, IV–148 pp., French, plates, contemporary midnight-blue half-calf, spine with 5 raised bands, author’s name and title gilded, ornate panels, name stamped on the tail, marbled edges, minor repairs (some rubbing on the spine, superficially cracked joints; scattered foxing).
An exceptional copy: this is the one belonging to the landscape and Orientalist painter Omer Hippolyte Ballüe (1820–1867). It is printed on large-format vellum paper.
A famous book, regarded as the first artist’s book. ‘A remarkable work, typical of the Romantic era, a masterful illustration by the great Delacroix, which is, fortunately, increasingly prized by bibliophiles of discernment…’ (Carteret).
The work comprises 18 original lithographs by Eugène Delacroix: a portrait of Goethe as the frontispiece and 17 plates.
First print of this work. The lithographs bear the address of the printer, C. Motte.
The standard size of the work as given by Carteret is 430 x 292 mm; this copy measures 520 x 335 mm.
Condition details: the lithographs are printed on pasted China paper, with variations in paper quality. Most are on very white or grey China paper; a few are on very fine, slightly yellow paper. The first plate is trimmed short at the bottom without affecting the text; on the 11th plate, the caption is printed on the backing paper.
Provenance: O. H. Ballüe (name stamped on the reverse).
(Carteret III, 270).
