Description
[Incunabulum]. ROLEWINCK (Werner). *Fasciculus temporum omnes antiquorum cronicas complecte[n]s incipit feliciter*… Basel, Bernhard Richel, 20 February 1482. Folio, [6] f. (table), XC folios, fig., 18th-century havana sheepskin, spine with 5 raised bands, red calfskin title label, decorated panels, red edges (binding worn, defects including a lacuna at the tail of the spine, one corner exposed, fastening on the upper cover stretched ; soiling, minor water stains of no consequence, tears with no loss to folios II, VII, VIII, LXXXIX and a few other small ones in the margins, small patch in the margin of folios XXXIX and XC, a hole affecting two letters on folio XLVIII). An illustrated incunabulum edition of this historical chronicle, which extends up to the death of Charles the Bold (1477), the work of Werner Rolewinck (1425–1502), a Carthusian monk from Cologne, theologian and historiographer. The woodcut illustrations consist of vignettes, some of which are repeated, depicting, in particular, a city in flames (used to represent both Troy and Babylon), Noah’s Ark, Solomon’s Temple, the Tower of Babel, and a man with a dog’s head… A copy in which all the vignettes and decorative elements have been coloured in the original style. On the first page of the text, there is a fine initial ‘G’ painted in red and black and bearing a coat of arms, which may be that of the volume’s first owner. Other owners: two old entries in Germanic script contain the name Rolsincki (?); another identifies the owner who commissioned the binding: ‘the late my grandmother, bookbinder, 2 livres 10 sols in Wissembourg on 12 February 1740’, with the initials ‘Ghm’. The table is usually bound at the end, rarely at the beginning as is the case with this copy. Four handwritten lines in German in the margin of f. LXXXVII v°.
