Description
[Denmark]. WORM (Ole). *Fasti danici*, setting out in three volumes the entire system of timekeeping traditionally observed in Denmark and neighbouring regions, drawn from various ancient sources and reliable authors of the country… Copenhagen, published by J. Moltken, 1643. Folio (27.5 x 17.5 cm.), [8] leaves (including the title page in Greek), 191 pp., [4] leaves (index, errata), contemporary ivory-coloured vellum, plain spine (washed vellum, on the upper cover, a few leaves browned, very faint water stains in the margins, a tear with traces of adhesive in the margin on p. 143).
A rare third, expanded edition of this important study on a medieval runic calendar, which was first published in 1626. This edition contains a longer text and five additional illustrations, including a full-page image of a runic calendar carved into bone. A Danish naturalist and collector, and personal physician to King Christian IV, Ole Worm (1588–1654) was undoubtedly the most brilliant pioneer of studies on runes and ancient Scandinavian culture.
The illustration consists of an allegorical title page and a portrait of the author on the verso of folio b2, both engraved on copper by the Flemish artist Simon van de Passe de Oude (1595–1647); 18 engravings of various sizes within the text, six of which are engraved on copper, the others on wood. The work also includes several tables; pages 125 to 158 are printed in red and black and feature, in particular, a calendar illustrated with figures.
Sign. a–b 4, A–Z 4, Aa–Bb 4.
